What If Financial Statements Worked Like Source Code?

What if the real opportunity is not just adding AI to accounting?
What if we rethink how accounting workflows themselves are built?
Because today, many financial reporting processes still look like this:
Eventually someone asks during the audit:
“Can you walk me through how this number was produced?”
And the answer often involves a heroic amount of detective work.
But software engineers solved this problem decades ago.
Modern software development follows three principles:
Source data is preserved Original inputs are stored and never overwritten.
Transformation logic is versioned All code changes are tracked in version control.
Results are reproducible Anyone can run the process again and get the same output.
This concept is called reproducible builds.
Now imagine applying the same idea to accounting.
In a reproducible accounting model:

This model does not eliminate internal controls.
It strengthens them.
Controls become embedded in the workflow:

Change management Are logic changes reviewed?
Testing Do automated checks confirm the accounting equation balances?
Human review Are statements approved before release?
Pull-request approvals become segregation of duties.
Automated tests become control activities.
Version history becomes part of the audit trail.
AI becomes even more useful in this environment.
Instead of producing final accounting conclusions, AI can assist with:
Because the pipeline is structured, AI outputs can be reviewed and validated more effectively.
AI becomes an assistant inside a governed system, not an uncontrolled decision maker.
Regulators have not mandated reproducible accounting architectures.
But several developments point in that direction:
Financial reporting processes are becoming more structured and more transparent.
Reproducible workflows are a natural extension of that trend.
Accounting has always been about trust.
Not blind trust.
Verifiable trust.
The goal of reproducible accounting is not to remove professional judgment.
It is to make the mechanics of financial reporting easier to verify.
Imagine a future audit conversation like this:
Auditor: “Can you walk me through how this number was produced?”
Controller: “Of course. Let’s run the pipeline.”
And the number appears – exactly as reported.
No detective work required.
